So yeah... Mr. Anti-Xbox is trying to fix a 360. Sad world we live in.

Anyway, got an Xbox, it has a little RROD problem. Weird thing is, you start it up, and it works, but as soon as you plug the Composite cable in, it red rings.
An HDMI cable, however, does no cause it to red ring.

What's the problem and how do I fix it?

My theory is that I need to remove the heat sink and reapply some thermal paste, but I'm just guessing there. Help, please?

Sounds more like a short in the composite cable connections OR in the cable itself. Have any way to test the cable?

GOnna take it down to playntrade and see if they'll test it for me later.

the combination of lights making the red ring will tell you what's wrong. what you're talking about will only fix an overheat problem - normally denoted by 3 of the lights in the ring lighting red. Sometimes the heatsink fix will work for a unit showing 2 lights.

all 4 lights lit mean there's an issue with the av cable either plugged incorrectly or faulty. HDMI cable issues has a different combo of lights (just 1 maybe?) it's been a while but a quick google will get you on the right track.
