Good question I think. If Halo 2 was not xbox live enabled, would the game be anywhere near as popular today? I don't think so at all.
Would halo have survived this long without live?

I don't think it would have mattered all that much. The first Halo stayed popular because even though it wasn't online, you could do 16 player LAN and with Xbox Connect you could trick it into playing online. I'm sure people would have done that with Halo 2 as well. But it's a possibility that it wouldn't have lasted as long as it did without true XBL playability.
