Wrong bottom line. I was speaking $$$.  :D

US $499.00 is the number Sony keep playing with.

Playstation 3 / Re: PS3 will be REGION-FREE (you read that right)
« on: April 12, 2006, 09:20:28 AM »
The region-free aspect of the PS3 will specifically be all Sony (read: first party) published games.  Third parties will have the option of including region lock-out with their software if they so choose (much like the current set-up with XBOX 360 software).

Nes, Super Nintendo / Re: This guy beat Mario 3 in eleven minutes.
« on: January 30, 2006, 12:15:47 PM »
The player's name is Morimoto.  He specializes in what the Japanese call "God Technique" videos.  All God Technique demonstrations involve the use of emulators and save-states.  In the case of many of Morimoto's replays, he actually plays the game set to 50% speed (or even slower... his FC/NES Gradius replay is done at something like 25% speed) and uses per-frame save-states (so if he makes a mistake, he can go back to the exact frame where he messed up).  After completing the run (which normally takes him about 18 months), he takes each frame of saved replay data and compiles it all together in Premier to produce the final video.

He issued a public apology some time ago for his videos, as many thought that what was being done in the videos was 100% human skill (which it isn't).  Since then, any videos that he has done come with a disclaimer at the beginning describing the process used to create the video (such as in his more recent DDP:DOJ Hibachi video).

Dreamcast / Re: Under Defeat - Possible Dreamcast Title
« on: January 13, 2006, 08:33:11 AM »
Here's a list of what the DC version will include (special thanks to Kron):

They've also updated opening the DC specific page and their are some great additions, They say the original arcade team are working on the port and it will be 100% arcade perfect...

http://www.grev.co.jp/ud_ac/dreamcast.html

Tate mode is in.

You can save entire replays of a stage that you've played and watch them back at different camera angles

There will also be an arranged soundtrack that you can choose in the options.

There will be a high quality rendered picture gallery.

Apparently, Under Defeat has been confirmed for release on Dreamcast.  The current release date is March 23rd, 2006.  Both a standard and a limited edition (which will include an OST CD) version will be released for US $60 and $80 respectively.

A Japanese Famicom 2 (top loader... actually, all Famicom units were top-loaders).  Works like a charm and is only slightly larger than my PC-Engine.

Now I just gotta track down a cart of Recca: Summer Carnival 92.

Playstation 1 and 2 / Re: FF character name pronounce?
« on: October 07, 2005, 08:49:01 AM »
Ive always wanted to know how to pronounce "Aeris." Ive always pronounced it "I-ris."

From what I remember, the katakana for Aeris/Aerith is literally "Erisu", which lead me to believe at first that her name was "Ellis" in English.  The Japanese have no 'th' sound.. so they often substitute it with s.

Tidus should be pronounced "tie-das".  I'm pretty sure it's written as "Taidasu" in Japanese.  If it was written as Chidasu, then tee-das would be accurate (or if they're using some really odd-ball katakana like a regular Te with a chisai 'I' after it).

Gamecube / Re: Sonic Gems Collection is OUT today on Cube!
« on: August 19, 2005, 11:12:51 AM »
Go crazy, all you Super Sonic Warriors!  ;D

Quick run down on what's on this collection for those who have been sleeping. (Dont worry, you can go back to bed after this)

Sonic R (Saturn)
Sonic the Fighters (Arcade)
Sonic CD (Sega CD)

and these 6 GameGear games

Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic Spinball
Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble
Sonic Drift 2
Tails' Sky Patrol
Tails' Adventures

Price, $29.99, only on GameCube in the USA

Plus Vectorman 1 and 2 are hidden in this collection.

I'd just like to point out that the versions of Sonic CD and Sonic R that are included with Sonic Gems are ports of the PC versions.. they are not the original Sega CD and Saturn revs (respectively).

The US GC release is also missing the 3 SOR/BK games, since including them would have required a T rating for the game (and SOA wanted to release it as an E game).

Sonic Gems is a GC exclsuive in the US... not a GC only release.  Exclusivity simply means that GC is getting it first... it does not rule out the possibility of a US PS2 release (although, SOA have shown no interest at the present of releasing a PS2 port).  At any rate, I'm quite happy with my Japanese PS2 release of the compilation.

Playstation 1 and 2 / Re: Final Fight: StreetWise
« on: August 16, 2005, 08:09:37 AM »
Grr..who all remember "Streets of Rage?" That's another good side scrolling beat'em up game! I had that game on Sega Genesis and played it death. :lol

Well I hope that this new Final Fight is at least good enough to actually want to finish the game. I think they should of just kept it at 2D graphics and just make it look really good, the artwork, etc. instead of going 3D. :-\

Edit: I dont know though I just looked at the screens again and it looks really good! :D
Grr..we have to wait 'till the Q4 2005 for a release, that's a long time! *doesn't want to wait*

Well, don't bother with it then.  Especially since Capcom are releasing a classic compilation on the PS2 which will inlcude an arcade port of the original Final Fight along with arcade versions of MERCs, Forgotten Worlds (analog stick compatible), 1942, 1943 and a whole slew of others (most of which had already appeared in the prior Capcom collection discs for the PSOne and Saturn).

Neo Geo AES / Re: NeoGeo questions
« on: August 09, 2005, 12:46:52 PM »
Untill I came to this forum, I had never heard of the NeoGeo system.  And today I poked around Ebay to see what they looked like. Why are these things so expensive?? Did they mainly release them in Japan, being that I saw more imports than anything? When were they produced?? And if I ever buy one, are the games easy to find?? Or will I have the same trouble I have with my Sega Master System?? I really like those Neo Geo Pockets, but I have never seen one. And is this system worth it to hunt one down??

www.neo-geo.com contains a plethora of information surrounding the most powerful of the 16-bit consoles.

The Neo-Geo AES console is roughly the same length and width as an X-Box... although it is about 2/3s as deep.  The system accepts carts that are slightly larger than a PSOne (the slim re-released model).  The home carts (AES) and arcade carts (MVS) are virtually identical, except for the size of the pin-out contacts (MVS are slightly longer).

Playstation 1 and 2 / Re: Final Fight: StreetWise
« on: July 21, 2005, 08:17:28 AM »
the only early Final Fight game that was on a Sega system, was Sega CD "Final Fight CD"...Genesis never had one....Final Fight series (1-2-3 and Guy) was mostly on SNES.....and then MIGHTY Final Fight on NES...then lastly...Final Fight Revenge on JPN Saturn.

Sadly, this game doesn't live up to the hype that the originals had...you play as the younger brother of Cody :( None of the original characters have been discussed yet..

Don't forget the Sharpe X68000 release of Final Fight and Final Fight One for GameBoy Advance.

Playstation 3 / Re: It's offical, PS3 for $399...I kid you not
« on: July 13, 2005, 03:42:05 PM »
As has been stated, the $400 price-tag (I hate the take-off-$1 nonsense to make the price appear less) is an estimate for the Japanese launch price... however, as has been seen before, this is often not the case.  Due to supply and demand at the time of launch I can see folks having to dump as much as $800 (NCSX were actually estimating upwards of $1000) to get the unit along with a pair of games in a bundle (which is exactly what happened with the Japanese PSP launch, at that time most folks were paying around $500 to get ahold of one due to how they were being sold by retailers).  The US launch may actually stick to the $400 mark though, as console-launches in the US have a tendancy to be considerably cheaper than their Japanese counterparts.

All in all though, don't be surprised to see on-line retailers selling-out of their import PS3 stock despite having to charge nearly a grand for a combo-pack unit.

Playstation 1 and 2 / Re: Gradius V -- vs -- R-Type Final
« on: July 04, 2005, 03:39:15 PM »
So ow many R-Types were there anyway?? I have the original R-Type on my Sega Mastersystem. I still enjoy playing it even though it's a frustrating game.

There are 7 R-Type games, although 2 of them are gaiden (alternate stories that aren't part of the main storyline).

The primary 5 parts are:

R-Type
R-Type II
R-Type III: The Third Lightning
R-Type Delta
R-Type Final

The other two which aren't associated with the main story are:

Super R-Type
R-Type Leo

Playstation 1 and 2 / Re: Gradius V -- vs -- R-Type Final
« on: July 04, 2005, 02:40:28 AM »
Gradius V is far better.

R-Type Final is painfully slow.  If you want to play the best R-Type.. snag R-Type Delta for PSOne.

Bman409:
Gradius and R-Type are as different as night and day.

Gradius is built around manipulating the Options and Rank control.  R-Type is wall-to-wall memorization and extensive use of the Force Pod.  Neither plays like the other... about the only thing the two series have in common is that they both occupy the same genre and both use horizontal scrolling.

Playstation 1 and 2 / Re: Your game list
« on: June 23, 2005, 09:42:40 AM »
I meant they use a german name to make it sound cooler. Release a game called "One handed", and it sounds stupid in the US. Call it "Einhander", and it sounds a lot cooler, especially if you don't speak german. Not that it's a bad thing, of course. Just stating a point. I think. Not quite sure. (too much coffee, too much work, too little sleep.)  ;)

Well, have you played Einhander?  The ship itself has a large mechanical arm used for grabbing weapons.  The inhabitants of Sonne (which just means Sun) upon seeing the craft dubbed it "Einhander" becuase of how it looked (apparently, most of Earth speaks German and the inhabitants of the Moon speak English).  The actual name of the craft (well, the standard production series) though, is the Endymion.

The Japanese cover for the game is the same as the title-screen... which is a blue X-Ray of a hand... Einhander (which BTW, can also be translated as "Single handed").  And just so you know, the convention of naming things after what they are is nothing new... for instance, Claymore simply means "Great Sword".

Look at some of the other game titles:
Panzer Dragoon (panzer means stealth [yes, it's also what they dubbed the tanks] and a dragoon is a cavalryman who carries a firearm)
Langrisser (it means Lung Ripper.. what this has to do with the game I have no idea)
Herzog Zwei (herzog = general and zwei = 2)

The Japanese happen to like how German sounds, so they end up using it in numerous game titles.. even if the translation is very basic.

Europe gets the PS2 version
USA gets the GameCube Version

Japan gets both.  Although, the GC rev is being released first.

Gamecube / Re: Playing imports

You can NOT have US and Japanese GC savefile on the same memory cart.  The GameCube will reformat the memory card each time you switch the regions of the games.  This has been confirmed by several of the folks over at the Shmups Forum (www.shmups.com).  I also suspect that you can not have a Euro and Japanese savefile on the same memory cart either.
