Welcome back. Nice to see an old face again.  :)

General Discussion / Re: So about EA and SWB2

Well, I did end up getting BF2. Obviously it does take a long time to unlock the heroes (I honestly don't fully understand the system yet and I've had it for about three weeks), but it seems they have created other ways to still get to play as those characters if you do well enough in a certain game. Overall, I don't think it is affecting me as much as I thought it would.

Good game, feel free to join me. :)

They did change and lower the overall time needed to unlock the characters due to the backlash.

That was a special case. Zelda is a no brainer title to have at both launch of a new console and an older one. Animal Crossing was a brand new IP, so it probably wouldn't have been worth it to pay for the manufacturing of carts. It's not something they have done regularly since.

EDIT: They did it again with Zelda on the Switch and Wii U, but I think that's the pattern here. Zelda sells much better than Animal Crossing.

The GC was already set to release that same year, so it made sense that they would skip the N64 to give the GC more titles. Plus it has enhancements. It's cool that you're able to have a cart of it though.

At most they will probably lose the Star Wars license. EA isn't going anywhere. Gamers still buy their other games, especially FIFA and Madden.

The reason I picked one up was because there are a lot of titles coming in now. Even big 1st person shooters like the latest Doom. I think Nintendo going with an Nvidia GPU is helping it bring more titles to the system.

I recommend you start saving up. The games are going to start piling up in my opinion.

Picked up a Switch a week ago. So far, my wife has been playing it but from what I've seen it's a cool little piece of kit. I'm genuinely excited to play in my bed rather than on the couch or desk.

Congrats!! I still have my original, launch 3DS. Not sure if I want to upgrade but if I do, it will probably be this.

Interestingly a lot of these are showing up on eBay at a discount. That is where I got mine which seems untouched and still in the box.

I'm sure the Switch had a lot to do with that.

Really happy to hear that! I'm stoked.

Once this is completed, I will be proceeding with several site updates. I'm excited!!!

Whoa!! I'm looking forward to it!

Can it handle the SNES ports?

Yes it can. The only thing it doesn't do is 3D. Everything else is the same. Just make sure it's the *new* 2DS XL and not the 2DS. The new one is a clam shell and the older one is a unibody that doesn't close.

If you don't care about the 3D, the 2DS XL is about $50 cheaper if I'm not mistaken.

I installed Zorin Lite on my ridiculously underpowered netbook from 2009. Runs much better than Lubuntu. I like it so far.

Yup. If you want compatibility with all of the VC games, then you need the *New* 3DS.

The reason for this is because it has more CPU power. Which apparently is needed so that ports run as accurately as possible.

Awesome, thanks for the clarification!

Guess I know what I'm doing this weekend.

Ports from the Virtual Console in general are darker than they originally were. The theory is Nintendo did this to reduce the possibility of causing seizures. Besides that, they're basically the same games you played. The sound might be a little off too but it's hard to notice unless you're doing side by side comparisons and it doesn't affect all games.

Cool. I build my own PCs so that shouldn't really be a problem for me. I do keep my older computers and eventually pass them down to my niece and nephew. I'll probably install Zorin for them.

I see that Zorin costs about $26 US. Not bad, much better price than Windows. Do you happen to know if that's a lifetime price or is that for each major version? I don't mind paying, just wondering what I get with that.

As much as I have really liked the Sony Dual Shock controllers.  I do not know if I could even get used to playing Skyrim, or most other controller-based games that I have on Steam, using anything but the 360 PC controller.

The main reason I offered it was because it can be customized just like a Steam Controller in Steam itself. If you don't want to get used to anything else, then feel free to stick with an Xbox controller. I'm fairly certain Skyrim has Xinput support. That's the beauty of PC gaming.

I'm using Zorin Linux on my desktop and Linux Mint on my laptop.

Which one do you prefer? I've used Linux Mint but had some issues with drivers. Which seems weird because it's just based of Ubuntu and that worked fine. Zorin looks nice. Might install it on my laptop this weekend.

That's the rub though. If nobody jumps on, then Linux won't grow to compete with Windows. So I'm willing to be a guinea pig. I've used Ubuntu enough that I can do all of my general computing on it. Gaming is still rough but it's getting bigger with Valve's and GOG's support.

It was great, not flawless, but still had lots of good stuff going on. Can't wait for Season 2.

I'm perfectly fine with Windows 10. Honestly, I feel it's the best Windows yet. I use it at home and professionally and whenever I go back to a Windows 7 machine, I don't like it.

However, my next computer might just be a Linux machine. It needs to get bigger if there is to be competition for Windows.

PC Games Discussion / Re: Summer 2015 Steam Sale a Bit of a Let Down?
« on: July 19, 2017, 12:06:33 AM »
The only reason I didn't buy much was because I pretty much own everything I want. I looked at the $5 and under list and nearly every game on each page showed as Owned. I guess I should start playing these games.  :lol

As an owner of a Steam Controller, I recommend just using a Dualshock 4 instead. You can customize just like a Steam Controller but feels much better. It's what I do. At this point, the only time I use the Steam Controller is if I don't need a right analog stick.

Yeah, this is a hard pass for me as well. Not going to be playing Nintendo's silly retail games.
