Okami
FF 12
Shin Megami Tensei - Devil Summoner
Guitar Hero 2
Lego Star Wars (Original Trilogy!)

Phantasy Star Universe
Valkyrie Profile 2
Tales of the Abyss (for those that like Tales games.....though I don't know why)
Destroy All Humans 2
Yakuza

Plus Rogue Galaxy and Persona 3 coming out early in 2007

Best lineup of titles coming - Period. Better than PS3, Wii, 360, PSP or DS

I don't need any next gen consoles when I have a lineup like this for PS2.

2
Xbox 360 / GTA 4 for 360 in October *2007*
« on: May 09, 2006, 02:43:11 PM »
Grand Theft Auto IV on October 16th 2006. Xbox 360 exculsive at the moment but it wasn't specifically stated.
Wll be updated episodically through Xbox live.

Also been announced for PS3 - not exclusive.

Slight amendment - missed the date

3
Zelda, new Pokemon *yawn*, Yoshi's Island, Diddy Kong, Tony Hawk, Sudoku and Final Fantasy III

Yeah I know Zelda and FF technically aren't new but they were shown at the press conference.

I keep looking for reasons to buy a DS....

So far Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center are the only things that interest me.

Well - Xenosaga if it gets an English release.

Just not enough to warrant a purchase for me.

Wii (Revolution) / Revolution Press Conference
« on: May 09, 2006, 01:38:18 PM »
So Zelda was delayed so they could make a separate version for the Rev with extra features. I'm surprised they didn't announce it six month from now, after everyone's bought one like they usually do with their stuff. I bet GC owners are real pleased about this development.

Couple of interesting sounding games. Wario Ware seems like a good fit and the disaster game sounds interesting.

I saw the Red Steel footage....and it was okay.

Super Mario Galaxy! Elebits. Red Steel (same footage as earlier), Rayman 4, Super Swing Golf Pangea, Project H.A.M.M.E.R., One Piece, Madden, Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles!, Zelda, Tony Hawk, Pilotwings. Oops - forgot Excite Truck (wth?), Tennis and Golf. Two sports so boring I forgot to mention them.

Hmmm - to be honest - not much better than Sony's announced titles yesterday - which weren't great. I was only interested in a couple of those (MGS 4, Lair and Assassin's Creed).

Then again, I haven't tried the system yet.

They claim they're taking risks but announcing a bunch of sequels for launch.

Definitely a wait, see and try it out before buying for me.

5
*ALL* the other systems have separate pages for each - Sega, Nintendo, even the Neo Geo and the *XBOX*

The PS1 and PS2 are lumped together though - why?

Is the trick to buy a Ps2 to be a real gamer?
God forbid that I don't like a system.... or company.... even though I like the majority out there

I didn't say the trick to being a "real" gamer was buying a PS2 - you're twisting my words - deliberately.
You already said you didn't like Sega when they were heavy competition for Nintendo.

Then if you really mean this, then you would want to see more games being posted to the Gamecube, no?    Like devil may cry, or the GTA.... or GT series.  Maybe some of the Namco Shooters.....  but you don't care to see them over there.... EVEN THOUGH it could help out the genre or industry.

It wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I'd like to see an EXACT quote of when I have EVER said that PS2 games shouldn't be ported to the GC.....because I haven't. Again, you're twisting my words - and flat out lying.

BTW - you know which version of Soul Calibur II I bought? The GC version - because I'm not a hypocrite.

General Discussion / Pokemon Causes Cancer!
« on: January 26, 2005, 10:35:45 PM »
Gotta Catch 'Em All!

NEW YORK, January 20, 2005 - Scientists at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) have identified a new cellular oncogene essential for the development of cancer. Oncogenes are genes that, when mutated or dysfunctional, lead normal cells to become cancerous. The investigators have named the gene POKEMON (for POK Erythroid Myeloid Ontogenic factor). The work is being published in the January 20, 2005, issue of Nature.

"There are a number of genes that can cause cancer, the so-called oncogenes, but Pokemon is unique in that it is needed for other oncogenes to cause cancer." said MSKCC cancer geneticist Pier Paolo Pandolfi, MD, PhD, the senior author of the study. "More important, because the Pokemon protein plays such a crucial role in the formation of cancer, it could prove to be an effective target for new drug therapies."

Pokemon works by controlling the pathways that are required to transform normal cells to cancerous ones. The researchers found that when they "knocked out" the Pokemon gene in mice, that transformation was blocked and cells do not become cancerous. (Knocking out a gene means inactivating it through genetic engineering.) A drug that could block the protein's function in the same way could be a powerful anticancer agent.

"Pokemon is a main switch in the molecular network that leads toward cancer," Dr. Pandolfi added. "If we could turn Pokemon off, it may block this oncogenic circuitry and stall the malignant process."

The investigators confirmed Pokemon's cancer-causing role by inserting the oncogene into mice. Pokemon does its damage by repressing the function of other proteins, including a tumor suppressor called ARF. The mice developed aggressive, fatal forms of lymphoma. In further work, using a technique called tissue micro arrays to study tumor samples from people with many types of cancer, they confirmed that Pokemon is present in very high levels in certain types of B-cell and T-cell lymphomas. They also found that tumors with high levels of Pokemon protein were much more likely to be aggressive.

"Pokemon is a member of a family of proteins that are known to be transcription factors and are mutated in human cancer," said Takahiro Maeda, MD, PhD, a postdoctoral research fellow in Dr. Pandolfi's laboratory who was the paper's first author. "It is likely that the protein plays a role in solid tumors as well, and we now have means to specifically interfere with the activity of these transcription factors."

Other authors on the paper were Robin M. Hobbs, PhD; Taha Merghoub, PhD; Ilhem Guernah, MS; Carlos Cordon-Cardo, MD, PhD; and Julie Teruya-Feldstein, MD from MSKCC; and Arthur Zelent, PhD, of the Institute of Cancer Research in the United Kingdom. The work was supported in part by a grant from the National Cancer Institute.

Namco announced today that it has signed a publishing deal with WayForward to bring its GBA exclusive action RPG Sigma Star Saga to retail in June 2005.
"Sigma Star Saga is an action-packed adventure that continues Namco's tradition of delivering the highest quality RPG experience, but now in the palm of your hand," said Jeff Lujan, the Handheld Business Unit Director at Namco Hometek Inc. "This game's great storyline, intense action, amazing sound and vibrant graphics all come together to create an original experience that's not to be missed."

An epic space battle RPG, Sigma Star Saga combines the exploration of an RPG with an action-packed shooter battle system, and best of all, a branching storyline with multiple endings.

Humanity is struggling to survive against the Krill onslaught. Sent in as a double agent, players must discover the mystery of six planets singled out in an intercepted message as important to the enemy's efforts, and help defeat the Krill from within before humanity's time runs out! By exploring the galaxy of Sigma Star Saga on foot, players can discover new parasitic Krill weaponry and gadgets in order to equip themselves and their spaceship. Additionally, you can collect up to 50 kinds of "Gun Data" and then combine them in simple combinations to customize and create their own unique weapon.

See? It's stuff like THIS which is why I bought the GBA. An original game by an established company.

There just needs to be about 90% more of it.

Gamecube / Revolution - Online News

Latest on Revolution's "online" news

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this issue of Game Informer magazine, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata comments on the bleak chance that Revolution will support online gaming. Iwata said, 'We don't think gamers are interested in playing online, yet'.

This bit of information didn't surprise me. The more appropriate response would have been 'We at Nintendo aren't ready for online gaming'. While Microsoft is scoring huge in the online console market with Xbox Live by offering titles that people want to play online, I honestly don't think Nintendo will ever aggressively, and seriously pursue online gaming.

For Nintendo to really cash in on online gaming, they will have to offer titles that will be successful online - games that will attracteveryone to pay for the service; and let's face it :  not many people will want to play current titles online like Mario Party, Power Tennis, or a Super Mario RPG.

So I was at EB in Ottawa today, picking up Onimusha 3 ($20 brand new!!! :D ) and checked out the DS, out of curiosity.

When I looked at the price on the box, I almost fainted. So much for competitive, lower priced Nintendo.

$199.99

Nintendo can kiss my *** if it thinks I'm going to pay that for it's rehash machine.

Chunsoft announced they have put the GameCube RPG Homeland on hold indefinitely, no reason is given. Homeland is a network RPG in which comes in two parts, you can either use your GameCube as a server and invite other people to join your game, or you can connect to someone else's games.

Nintendo proclaims itself winner of handheld race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nintendo has proclaimed itself the undisputed winner in the handheld race. And for now, no one can contest the claim.

In a presentation yesterday at the Tokyo headquarters of the Foreign Correspondents Club, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata reportedly said, "Both in the US and Japan, our supply cannot catch up with demand." Earlier today, Nintendo announced plans to increase shipments of the DS to North America by 40 percent. "We're running short on stock," he told attendees.

Commenting on the DS's unique selling point, one he summed up as "easy to play and fun to play," Iwata distanced his company's solution from Sony's. "The old formula for success--the combination of high-specification game consoles and advanced graphics--is no longer working," he said. "We now need to create a new proposal for our customers to set a new course for the industry. The launch of the Nintendo DS is our answer to such challenge."

Addressing the PSP directly, Iwata said, "I believe the PSP is built on the belief that the old formula for success is still viable, although we do not think so. ... Although we have no intention of fighting over the market share with Sony, we will make our utmost efforts to help people understand that our approach is right."

The strong language from Nintendo comes just days before the launch of the competition's entry into the handheld space. The PSP goes on sale in Japan on December 12.

Staying closer to the facts, Iwata also updated sales numbers for the handheld, saying, "In the US, sales have already hit 1 million units." Commenting on those sales, he said, "To meet strong demand, we will ship 2.8 million Nintendo DS consoles by the end of December, about 800,000 units higher than we had initially targeted."

Additionally, Iwata made brief mention regarding Nintendo's plans to enter the Chinese market, but wasn't clear on whether he specifically meant with the DS. "We are moving in some new directions [toward the China market]," he said. "But it will be a while before we can talk more about it."

To what extent the DS can maintain its first-to-market advantage, however, remains to be seen. The PSP launch, just days away, will put Iwata's fighting words to the test.

It seems awfully arrogant to proclaim yourself winner when the competition hasn't even been released. To say you're confident in your product is one thing - what he's doing is ridiculous.

"I believe the PSP is built on the belief that the old formula for success is still viable, although we do not think so."

Yet what do they launch with? Metroid and Mario.   ::)

Playstation 1 and 2 / Katamary Damacy....2!
« on: November 26, 2004, 05:59:23 AM »
November 26, 2004 - There's been lots of unofficial talk about a sequel to Katamari Damacy, this year's most original game. At long last, the unofficial has just became official thanks an investor report hosted at Namco's WonderPage official website. The report lists Katamari Damacy 2 as set for Japanese PS2 release in the 2005 financial term. The game's name seems to be final; as it's not listed with the "tentative" marking that accompanies a few other titles.

With the announcement out of the bag, we expect to hear details on this sequel soon. Stay tuned!

Sony puts 500 PSPs up for auction, early distribution

Sony Japan enlists top online retailer in scheme to direct funds to earthquake victims in Japan.
TOKYO--It's the perfect pay-to-play scenario. 500 PSPs are being put up for auction on Japan's most popular online retailer site, Rakuten, at exactly 12:01am on November 24. Beginning then, and for the next 24 hours, Rakuten will monitor an auction of the PSPs. The top 500 bidders will receive their game units a week before the handheld's official December 12 release date.

All proceeds from the auction will be donated to organizations that are aiding in efforts to assist Niigata earthquake victims. Niigata prefecture suffered a powerful earthquake on October 23, 2004, and an estimated 7,000 people remain unable to return to their homes, according to recent news reports.

Sony will start shipping the 500 PSP Value Packs a week before the handheld's official launch. The units will be configured with the additional capability to display the new owner's name, which is something regular PSPs won't be able to do.

Gamecube / Another Capcom employee speaks out about RE4
« on: November 12, 2004, 01:43:33 PM »
From Gamewatch:

GW: Why the sudden announcement to make it on PS2.

Kobayashi: In order to help stablize our revenue and create better relations with shareholders and increase the value of our stock we chose to port RE4. It was purely a business decesion.

GW: Despite your previous claims on RE4 being GC exclusive.

Kobayashi: When I made those comments, I was am the acting producer on RE4. Having said that, at the time it was a choice we made that RE4 could generate a profit (break even) on the GC. And as a producer, that is my only concern. For the game to be reputable and generate pure profit. And I believe it could have. But there are other factors that were outside of the development staff that caused the game to be ported. This deceision was made by non-developers, those who's job is to ensure the Capcom's future finicial sucess. Apparently, the PS2 was seen as extra profit, and thus we were told to port it. My say is only limited, but at the time, and my perspective I was 100% confident and sure it would remain GC exclusive.

GW: Forever?

Kobayashi: As far as I was concerned, sure. But keep in mind, the PS2 port will come 3 to 5 Quarters after the GC release. In our relationship with Nintendo, they still see this game as Nintendo Exclusive.

GW: Can you comment on these rumors about many of the design staff leaving.

Kobayashi: Personally, I'm upset with Capcom's deceision but as a producer I understand where they are coming from. Regarding the other staff, this isn't a rumor. It's truth. They are moving to Clover Studios. However, that is still a studio that is onwed by Capcom. It's a part of Capcom. Profits and pubslishing is still from Capcom etc.

GW: So Mikami is done with the RE series.

Kobyashi: I do not know. Depending on how well some of our newer large titles sell (DMC3 and Viewtiful Joe 2) determine a lot of future things. I cannot say. But if Mikami wanted to , he can and very well make another RE game. Clover studios has full access to the licensing equipment, brands etc that belong to Capcom, and obviously vice-versa. That is why Dante was in Viewtiful Joe (ps2-port). Dante belongs to Capcom but Clover still has rights to him just like any other Capcom Studio.

GW: Is it ture that many of the design staff is upset with the higher "ups" at Capcom.

Kobayashi: No. Definantly not. And Never. They are all hardworking people and ultimately, they all want their game to be played by more people than not. We understand that some Nintendo fans are upset, but that is their problem. They need to understand that a company must maximize each games profit to stablize revenue and generate a higher return so we can continue to make quality and ground-breaking games.

GW: You talk about maxing out each game's potential revenue, so why don't you consider porting the DMC series to Gamecube? Being that it's a multi-million+seller, it could certainly find a home on the GC console as DMC and RE are very similar games in terms of target audience and fan base.

Kobayashi: This could happen at many requests...

GW: And finally, what do you have to say to those that are thrilled about the news, those that are concerned for Capcom, and those that aren't so glad to hear what has happened.

Kobayashi: Re4 has been designed for the Gamecube. Beyond that I cannot say more. But certainly keep that in mind. It will also appear on the GC early 2005, almost a year before the PS2 port. That is still exclusive in business relation terms. We only do this to stablize more profit, so that we can create stronger games and help prepare us for the large R&D costs that come with the next-generation consoles. We hope you'll play RE4, it's a great game I am truly proud of. Please, be optimistic that the RE series will now expand to greater lengths and more people can be introduced to the game series they all know and love, and help support.

As I said - it's cut and dried. It's simply the shareholders wanting more money. There's nothing more to it.

General Discussion / Nintendo apologises to **** site!
« on: November 05, 2004, 11:33:17 PM »
From Gamespot -

RUMOR #4: Nintendo has issued an official apology to a pornography site.

Source: Good ol' Brit gamsters Spong, who are always good for a laugh (or two).

The official story: See below.

What we heard: Several weeks ago, Nintendo of America issued a cease-and-desist order to *****.com, a sofcore pornography site which specializes in amateur pictures of tattooed, pierced, and (naturally) naked punk rock women.

Apparently, each woman on the site has a profile where they list their interests, and one member called RuneLateralus--a self-described "computer animation student and video game addict"--mentioned Metroid and Zelda as her favorite video games. Somehow, a member of NOA's legal department got wind of this and issued the aforementioned order, saying the mention of the two games was “unauthorized use of Nintendo trademark works.”

After two weeks of widespread derision among gamers--including a hilarious Penny Arcade strip--Nintendo officials confirmed to GameSpot that the company had withdrawn the order and issued a formal apology to ****.com in general and RuneLateralus in particular.

"We would like to apologize to you and to those who frequent the ****.com website for inadvertently contacting you about a fan posting on the website," read the letter. "The letter was sent as part of an ongoing Nintendo program to aggressively protect our younger consumers from the hundreds of sexually-explicit sites each year that use Nintendo properties to attract children.…

Unfortunately, the site posting identified in our letter was targeted by mistake." This story even has a happy ending (and not the massage parlor kind). "As a gesture of goodwill," NOA is offering both the **** administrator and RuneLateralus "a free Nintendo video game system and game of your choice."

Heh - that's funny.

According to Reuters, Nintendo today announced that its forthcoming DS (or "dual screen") portable game system will be available in the United States in exactly two months. The system is reportedly slated for release on November 21 (which is actually a Sunday) for a suggested retail price of $149. This puts the system in the same relative price range as the current crop of consoles, but at nearly twice the cost of Nintendo's recently-reduced-in-price Game Boy Advance SP, whose software will be playable on the DS.

The Nintendo DS will subsequently release in Japan on December 2. Nintendo expects to ship about 4 million DS units worldwide by the end of the first quarter of 2005.

I shall now wait for the inevitable - "You're just posting this because you hate Nitnendo" comments.
