DS Canadian Price - and people say *SONY* gouges?
« on: January 06, 2005, 11:56:48 PM »
So I was at EB in Ottawa today, picking up Onimusha 3 ($20 brand new!!! :D ) and checked out the DS, out of curiosity.

When I looked at the price on the box, I almost fainted. So much for competitive, lower priced Nintendo.

$199.99

Nintendo can kiss my *** if it thinks I'm going to pay that for it's rehash machine.

Ok, excuse me if I'm just being ignorant, but isn't that what $150 is equal to in Canadian money?

Well lately the exchange rate has been about 90 cents on the dollar - I'm terrible at math, so you tell me.

http://www.xe.com/
looks like right around $0.80-0.81.... I have not seen the exchange near 0.90..... and I do keep track of exchanges because I deal a lot with International buyers (and I buy internationall as well).

it was about 0.75 the other day... so as always, the markets fluctuate.
anything else new?

Also, that is just FLAT exchange rate.  That doesn't count any of the companies markups for exchanging the currency..etc.
What does that mean?  Normally companies themselves do not handle the cash exchanges (duh) they have to go through banks.... or Paypal.... or some 3rd party service.  This costs a fee.  That is also included in the price you see @ retail in Canada.

0.80 on the dollar would be equivalent to $180 USD in CDN

IF when making their MSRP the exchange was 0.70.... it would be:
$195.
I am sure a markup is built in there for fluctuations in the CDN currency.

Be happy that your currency is now up to 0.80 of the dollar... its normally 0.60-0.65
That means.. you can import for cheaper basically :)

Well my point is that I saw a PSP at a store here and it was $550, but I didn't go around saying, "OMG, what a horrible price!" because I know 1) that's an import price and doesn't reflect how much it's actually going to be when it comes to the US and 2) the store owner sets the price anyway. I'm sure in fact that I could import it for less than $550 from somewhere else if I wanted. If $199 is too much for a DS, see what other prices other places have it for, or just don't get it, since you didn't want to anyway. I don't see why you had to even come post this since we already get the point that you don't want a DS or anything to do with Nintendo.

or just import :)

I deal with a quite a few Canadian buyers.  They all have said that the US currency has dropped enough that it costs less to buy a lot of their games from the US now because generally their prices are always higher anyway.

Ya, I'm used to ridiculously high prices and inferior currency. I'm also used to paying %14 tax on almost everything, so buying from the states would actually be much cheaper.

PSP's going to be $299.99 in Canada. Compared to only $199.99 for the DS.

So now all I have to say on this topic is:

Does this mean Sony can kiss your *** now if they think you're going to buy a portable PS2?

Everyone thought we were just bashing Sony on saying that the price was going to be that much higher than the DS. Well look, guess who was actually right, and not just bashing Sony. I expect some kind of apology to Nintendo for accusing them of price gouging.  :p

FYI Neph: DS isn't the "rehash" machine, PSP is.

Keep in mind that the PSP's functionality far exceeds the DS's. Once people stop playing games on their PSP they can still use it for a number of other things. Listening to music, watching movies, etc.

Also keep in mind this is Canadian dollars we're talking about here. An extra $100 here translates to about $70 in the States. 70$ more than the DS is fairly reasonable, considering the quality of graphics and once again, the addec functions.

But the PSP is $100 more than the DS in both countries.

US
DS = $150
PSP = $250

Canada
DS = $199
PSP = $299

So basically you're paying a $100 extra for the added functions. Which does make sense. I never expected it to match the DS in price simply because it does have all of the extra features.

The whole point though was that Neph was complaining how expensive the DS was in Canada, and from my first post I said that it was just because of the exchange rate. And in the PSP price post I asked him if he really thought the PSP would be less than $199 in Canada. Well it's not, so that's why I posted.  :p

Really, Neph needs to stop making these topics. And i'm not saying that as a Nintendo fan, i'm saying it because his topics are biased, arrogant and just plain stupid.

If I could - which sadly I can't - I would seriously warn him with a ban.

watching movies... gives you around 2 hour battery life... if that.
better keep the charger on hand.

I was playing puzzle games on it.  Charged the system 2.5 hours... only to play it around 3.5 hours I believe.

Thats fine... it can play music, and movies (mind you the movies have to be in the UMD format and you have to buy them... you cannot just play your normal DVD movies on it).

Well, I'm assuming it's only for when you're travelling or something like that, otherwise you could just watch the movie on your regular TV which is probably much bigger. If that is the case, 2 hours should be all you really need, and if you do need more I'm sure you can buy a second battery or find a plug in somewhere to charge it. Either way, the point is that you can if you really want to.

Well, if this really is about which company is gouging Canada, it would have to be Nintendo. Nintendo, on their $150 system, charges an extra $50 for the exchange rate. Sony, with their $250 system, charges an extra $50 for the exchange rate.

So they are both charging an extra $50, but Nintendo is gouging while Sony isn't?

 :huh

So since the DS is less, its exchange rate should be less than $50. I think I get it now.

Sony should be charging more for the exchange rate if their product costs more, but they're not. So, either Nintendo is overcharging for the exchange rate, or Sony is taking a small hit on the exchange rate. Whatever the case, Sony looks like the good guy.

Is the PSP worth 250$ if you know it will get scratched up no matter what.
