Possible TV Help/Advice? Please?

So Im buying a tv soon (months of saving FTW!) and since I have Amaozn Prime now I thought it would be a good time to put it to used since some tvs have such awesome deals.

Anyway with a respectable HDTV, is a 32inch one good for videogames? Thats all Im really using it for (and is there much noticable different between 720p and 1080p? Thanks if you can helppa me. 

My limitations for seating distance are just the length of the PS3 charge cord, cause I usually like to use my favorite PS3 dualshock 3 and when it charges down I sit with it connected to charge it back up (which seemed to be roughly 4ft)

The difference between 720p and 1080p is only noticeable if you go above 42 inches. Otherwise, it's a waste of pixels. For your situation, a 32 inch TV is pretty much perfect. The only drawback is that you won't be able to watch blu-ray or play certain games in 1080p, but they still look very good on a 32 inch.

Are there any specific televisions you're looking at right now? Is there a specific price point you want to meet?

I should also mention that when looking for an LCD, refresh rates should be something you want to take into account. You don't want a slow LCD because it can ghost some of the faster moving objects in the game.

Is it possible to save up a couple hundred more? It will be difficult to find a TV in that price range that would be well suited for gaming.

I could but I was aiming on just getting something to upgrade from this current 19 inch tv I use now. I was aiming to hopefully get a 42+ bigger tv in 2 years or so, so I just need something adequete and cost friendly for the time being.  as long as its currently decent for gaming and dvd watching, im happy and not more than my 400

I've been looking for one to go in my living room for movie watching. I don't think you'll be able to find a decent one for $400. The lowest I've seen is $630, thats for the specs i want though.

That's a decent interim TV for you. Don't think you'll find anything better in that price range.

Well I ended up finding this TV on Amazon after more searching.  I think Im going to go for it, (although its refurbished I guess it still has the full warranty, should definitely last me two years, and is 1080p and bigger).

It's only a 90 day warranty from what I've seen. If it doesn't fail on you within that time, you should be good. Vizio's are good TVs, especially if it's just an interim. You won't notice much of the 1080p resolution on a screen smaller than 42 inches though, but if you use it as a PC monitor you will. Good find.

HDMI does both Audio and Video. I use it with my current 19 inch, pretty convenient (and my laptop with HDMI).  In my lab I use like a 22 inch widescreen lcd monitor, I think its pretty awesome size.

Not off the top of my head, but I can see if I find anything. Usually with monitors that support HDMI, they're a bit more expensive since they'll include speakers for the audio.

What does calibrating do?  I read reviews of what some people said and I think they said that its so bright they need sunglasses to see white scenes, Im assuming they just have the brightness way up, but that sounds kind of odd as well, lol.

Calibration is when you set the TV to display the proper brightness/contrast and color. If you don't calibrate your TV, you're not getting the full picture quality it has to offer. Which also means, if you don't calibrate, you're losing picture detail. This is very important in video games when you need to see certain pixels for items, enemies, etc.

From what you wrote about the brightness comments, it sounds like their contrast ratio is too high. You want white to be white, but if it strains your eyes, then you can lower the setting a bit. It's one of the drawbacks of the LCD technology as well. It can get very bright.

I got a $279 insignia, i am quite satisfied with what i bought however i now know what you mean by "blinding whites" in the opening scene of blazblue there are segments where i can't really see the characters very well due to a white background, so how do i calibrate it?

There's some free calibration tools out on the net. The ones I use are from the AVS Forums, which are really nice. You just place them on a USB drive and run them through your PS3 (They're AVCHD videos.) I can upload them for you if want them.

No problem. I'll try to get them to you in a few, but if not, it would be later tonight since I would have to upload the files from my own PC.

In the meantime, I recommend just lowering the Contrast a few notches until you can see more detail.
