Favorite zombie movies thread
« on: October 02, 2010, 03:47:00 AM »
It's October.  October means Halloween.  Halloween means zombies.  So, who are your favorite movies full of undead cannibals?

My favorites list:

Dawn of the Dead 2004: This remake of the Romero classic has the "Olympic runner" style zombies.  This is my drop dead favorite zombie flick.  The characters actually have some depth.  The action if phenomenal.

Shaun of the Dead: This Brit humor parody makes fun of so many zombie movie cliches while simultaneously staying true to them.  Instant classic fit for any collection!

Diary of the Dead: One of Romero's more recent films, he went back to a roots style approach with a smaller budget, home movie style camera work, a few awkward comedy moments, and underlying social commentary.  This is such a great film but too often overlooked.

Zombieland: If you could make Left 4 Dead 2's Dark Carnival chapter into a movie, this would be it.  The acting is great, the stated rules of the zombie genre are excellent, and this movie overflows with gore, funny moments, and Twinkies.

Honorable mention:

Resident Evil: As a prequel story to the first RE game, the movie does a decent job.  The zombies are pretty decent and the movie sticks to zombies for the duration before getting to weird mutating creatures and corporate conspiracy.  This is the only RE movie worth watching IMO.  It's inherent cheesiness is salvaged by the excellent soundtrack.

28 Days Later, is not only my favorite zombie movie, but also one of my favorite movies in general. Had the L4D feel to it, and didn't have the typical downcast feeling all the time like mots zombie movies. Sometimes you just gotta celebrate when you find some free copy paper. ;)

2nd favorite is Day of the Dead (1985). The characters were great, the acting, the effects, were really freat, especially for their time. And let's face it, it has a zombie that can fire a gun, very well, might i add. It doesnt get much better.

3rd favorite is Zombieland, for pretty much the same reasons Grind stated.

Dead Alive 1992: Peter Jackson's weirdest zombie film.
Night of the Living Dead (1990) I loved the remake.
White Zombie 1932 (Bela Lugosi)- Probably one of the first Zombie movies made.
Zombie Nightmare (1986)
Return of the Living Dead (1985)
Shaun of the Dead
Dawn of the Dead (Remake)
Dawn of the Dead (original)
Pet Cemetary (Yes it had Zombies)
The House by the Cemetery (1981)

The Mega.

I hadn't even thought of Pet Cemetery, but yeah, I'd say that would kinda count!

Diary of the Dead: I loved this one mainly because of the ending
(click to show/hide)
I don't know why but that ending stuck with me it was simple but effective.

28 Weeks Later: I question weather this and 28 Days Later can actually be classified as zombie films because technically they aren't actually zombies it's just a virus that makes people uncontrollably angry but ill throw it on my list any way because i loved this movie and i sort of see it as a "realistic" view on if there was going to be a zombie like apocalypse this would be it.

but i use realistic very loosely because even this scenario is a bit out there but it's far more closer to being realistic than the dead coming back to life.

Rec:I normally hate movies set in a single place but i absolutely loved this movie. This is a FANTASTICALLY creepy and atmospheric zombie movie instead of doing the whole zombies taken over the world scenario this is set just in a apartment building but the way it's filmed and the fact there is no music or over the top sound effects really play a big role in making this zombie movie probably one of the creepiest horror movies Ive seen and the ending is just down right bone chilling i highly recommend this film for zombie fans and just horror fans in general.

By the way there was a American remake titled Quarantine but i recommend seeing the original Rec but just warning you Rec is subtitled but believe me it's so much better than the remake.

Dawn of the Dead remake: This very rarely happens but i loved the remake more than the original it's just a fantastic action/zombie film extremely entertaining.

Shaun of the Dead: This right here is horror comedy in general done right hilarious and entertaining and one of the only comedy's at the time that was actually funny.

Zombieland: This is a dead set classic and i loved the step by step survival guide very funny.

Honorable mention this isn't a movie but a short TV series called Dead Set i recommend zombie lovers check it out it's quite good.

Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972)

Did you know that before directing the timeless holiday film "The Christmas Story," Bob Clark was making zombie films? This low-budget movie follows an acting troupe who decide to spend a weekend on an island acting out satanic rituals - all in good fun, of course. But when they get a little too cozy a member of the local graveyard's population, they pay the price.

So, my town had a zombie walk take place during the Down Town Fright Night event.  My girlfriend decided to have a pre and post zombie walk party.

I was just disappointed that the pizza wasn't Tombstone (get it?).

Anyhow, when I got to the apartment, Zombieland had just finished and Dawn of the Dead (2004) was just starting.  We followed those movies with Return of the Living Dead and 28 Weeks Later.  I liked 28 Weeks quite a bit more than 28 Days Later.

Tonight Renee and I watched Ahhh! Zombies! (aka Wasting Away apparently), which is a zombie movie from the perspective of the zombies.  It's good and funny.

Dead Snow is entertaining for a few minutes if one wants to see Nazi Zombies run over by snowmobiles.

I Am Legend kinda/sorta is a zombie movie, though the book made the creatures seem a bit more like vampires.  It is still worth mentioning and worth watching.  Will Smith plays the party very well.

The Walking Dead is a fantastic series, wonderfully thought out.  The acting is high quality and the zombie make-up is top notch.

On the other end of the spectrum, the movie House of the Dead (based on the game) is TERRIBLE.

I've gotten just about everyone I know addicted to the walking dead, even my father who has never watched or cared about the zombie genre. There is just something for everyone to like from that series.
