There is none. The reason we have it is because we are not allowed sigs at all.

This site uses PHP, and some of the other forums I go to use it also. I don't know technical details, but i think you have to enable full signature, and then eliminate pictures altogether. That's how it's set up on the other forums. I guess it just depends on what you would rather have; picturse enabled, or a full-text signature. Personally, I have never had a problem with not being able to use pictures, mainly because you can just use Walagata.

Anyway, just a thought.

I think the reason why we have none is so the site is more dial-up friendly.

IMO, the attempt to be courteous to one group of people (dial-up users) alienates another group of people (broadband users).

Either way someone gets the shaft...

not really... Everyone gets to use the site that loads fast without a lot of congestion. Sigs really make things look nasty.
Besides the dial problem, I don't like extra text everywhere cluttering things up. IMO everyone wins all around. I was on BROADBAND (yes, cable) when I started our last board.... and when we finally canned sigs in 2002. In 2002, things we SOOO SLOW due to the sigs, that it made broad band users go slow. On other sites that use sigs, they load (IMO) a lot slower too....

What is really needed in a sig? Advertisements? what in a sig is SOOO important that is not in your profile... or whatever?

The only reason there is 1 character is because I couldn't (yet) totally disable sigs.

The only problem I have now with sigs (2 years later), is that I cant use my Japanies symbols from my XP character map >.<

Well, I think the fact that a basic part of forums everywhere is the sig. Its like eating ice cream without a cone, its doesn't feel right.

As far as them being ads, I don't think so. Some sigs I've had at other forums are

It is a big part because people advertise their sites, and many other things. I do it at other sites as well.... I am on at least 15 different forums, and each forum I have an advertisement for this site. the MAJORITY of the people are advertising something. Whether it be their playasia.com deals.... their sites, sites they visit.... or other random stupid crap in sigs that just have no sense. (and yes, I still post at these other sites when I get time).

We've had sigs for quite a long time at our old site... and I've seen them enough in my time of visiting other ... I know what they are about.
75% of the Ezboard sigs were advertisements. AT LEAST 50-60% on the boards I've been to are advertisements.... for sites, what they are selling in the selling forums..etc.

Sigs are a dead topic here... we've seen a huge improvement when we killed them off a few years ago, and we are not going back. If people cannot enjoy a site because they do not have sigs, then maybe they are here for the wrong reason. we have great members, nice topics... and that is the main important ingredient.

there is a chance I'll add something else in the future... but I am not sure. It is like a single page in everyone's profile that they can edit with their information. BUT then we have to keep checking all that for what is linked...etc.

Maybe at EZboard they advertise, but then again sigs there supported more than just text. At text only sites I could get 100 random sigs and I guarantee less than 50 would be ads.

going back and re-reading what I wrote... I wanted to place emphasis on the reason..... It's not so much and advertiser / spammer situation.. that is not near as much of a problem as was the performance decrease we had. I kid you not.... it SIGNIFICANTLY improved site loading for everyone... with the majority of the improvement seen by 56k users. I typically design my sites with 56k users involved... infact, I benchmark on something lower.

I want to make the site friendly for everyone. Sigs got annoying too...

it really cluttered up the topics.

This place is the fastest loading site I go to because there is no sigs.
