This is a Super Paper Mario review by Jack. Search for Super Paper Mario (Wii) at the Game Addiction Store.
The Wii has pumped out some good starter titles the past few months, such as Zelda and Warioware. This game is Nintendo's best Wii game yet. Super Paper Mario introduces many new features never seen in a game before. So get ready to turn your head right ways, left ways, up, and down. This game is great in every direction you turn.
Nintendo Released 2007 Number of Players: 1
Graphics:
Well I can't say the graphics are much of an improvement. The typical graphics you would expect from a game which is meant to look like paper. Not much difference from the Gamecube's "Thousand Year Door". I mean you may be able to tell some differences here and there, maybe in cut scenes and whatnot. The main thing about this game is the gameplay though, not the graphics. So not absolutely horrible, but not the best thing in the world. It's what you'd expect from the game. I give the graphics a:
7/10
Sound:
The sound is an improvement from the graphics. Nothing fancy or special, just good solid sounds. You will recognize many sounds from the old Mario games as well as some newly designed ones. The music though, is sort of bland. You hear the same melody pretty much through every world and the melody in the main town gets old very quick. Although the cut scenes are sound ok, they're not the best thing ya ever did hear. So the sound outweighs the graphics, mildly. I give the sound a:
7.5/10
Gameplay
This is where all the fun is. The new, improved gameplay is absolutely magnificent. It plays just like the idealistic Mario platformer. You can actually jump on enemies without engaging in an annoying turn-based battle system. Although this game is a side-scrolling platformer, it still retains some of those RPG elements we all know and love. You can still level up Mario and Co. by killing monsters and getting experience points. Super Paper Mario also brings back the secondary characters that follow you on your adventure. These characters are called Pixls, and aid you in your quest in many ways. They each have different powers. For example, boomer can turn into a bomb and explode things and Kerry can turn into a board-like thing and carry you over dangerous things such as spikes. There are many more Pixls, but I won't ruin that for you. But the newest and wildest addition to this game is by far the most interesting. The ability to flip. You can play as many characters throughout the game such as Mario and Peach. Each of their own ability. Mario's power is the ability to flip the stage sideways so that you may find hidden pipes, doors, coins, etc. This allows for hours of exploration on some levels and to find certain hidden items like powerups and such. The gameplay is totally awesome and is much improved from the previous installments. I give the gameplay a:
9/10
Difficulty:
The game itself is not incredibly difficult. But at certain points in the vast amount of worlds, you will find yourself stumped. This is where flipping comes into play. Every puzzle is solveable and not so hard that you chunk your Wii mote at the TV, but not a no-brainer. I guess it may be more difficult for the younger generation, but not so much for the older ones. To grade this, the higher the number, the more difficult it is:
5/10
Replay Value
No. The game does not have any unlockables. Play through it again if you wish, but once should be quite enough. It'll be the same plot, same characters, same thing all over again. I myself don't go through adventure/RPG games more than once. I give the replay value a:
3/10
Overall:
I think this game is a great buy. It is good for younger fans and the veterans of the Nintendo franchise. A great addition to the Wii library. But if you are skeptical as to whether or not this game is worth the money, give it a rent. The game is at least worth a rent and should not be looked over. The replay value and graphics aren't that great, but the gameplay makes it worthwhile. Nintendo succeeds yet again in making an odd, but great game.
